Factors to Consider before Purchasing Diamonds

Factors to Consider before Purchasing Diamonds

Buying a diamond is a high-value, long-term investment. Whether it’s for a proposal, an anniversary gift, or a treat for yourself, it requires thorough knowledge and the right purchasing skills. This guide will help you avoid common pitfalls and make an informed decision.

Basic Understanding of Diamonds

It’s difficult to expect every diamond buyer to have a consistent level of knowledge or expertise. Therefore, before purchasing a diamond, you should thoroughly familiarize yourself with this diamond guide to ensure you get the best value; otherwise, you may fall into one or more traps.

Understand the Priority of The "4Cs"

Before deciding how to prioritize the 4Cs, it’s important to first understand what they actually mean. In simple terms, the 4Cs consist of four criteria: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat. This is the system developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) to evaluate a diamond’s quality.

  • Cut

GIA (Gemological Institute of America) considers cut the most crucial of the 4Cs because it dictates a diamond's sparkle, brilliance, and fire. It is the only C not determined by nature, as it refers to the precision of the faceting, proportions, and polish. GIA grades cut for round brilliants on a scale: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor.

Diamond-cut-scale

A well-cut diamond can make a lower-color or lower-clarity diamond look spectacular, whereas a poorly cut diamond will appear lifeless despite high clarity or color grades. Therefore, focusing on an Excellent or Very Good cut is considered the best way to ensure a diamond's beauty.

DEFINITIES Diamond is our signature ideal-cut diamond, crafted with precision to achieve the coveted Hearts and Arrows pattern. This effect can only be achieved when every facet is cut with absolute precision—resulting in unmatched brilliance, fire, and scintillation. According to IGI grading data, fewer than 1% of diamonds worldwide meet true Hearts & Arrows standards.

  • Color

Only a small percentage of diamonds are truly colorless. Gemologists grade diamond color on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). Diamonds closer to colorless appear brighter and deliver better brilliance, which is why they are typically the most valuable.

We generally recommend choosing diamonds in the D to J color range. If your budget allows, opting for colorless grades (D–F) is ideal for maximum brightness and purity.

For better value, Near Colorless grades (G–J) are also an excellent choice, offering a balance between appearance and price.

  • Clarity

Both natural and lab-grown diamonds contain internal inclusions and external blemishes to some degree. Clarity is graded under 10× magnification based on how visible these characteristics are, taking into account their number, type, visibility, and position.

The GIA clarity scale consists of 6 categories and 11 grades, with higher clarity levels indicating better transparency and overall appearance. While a VS1 diamond and an SI2 diamond may look nearly identical to the naked eye, their overall quality can differ significantly.

For this reason, we generally recommend choosing a clarity grade of VS2 or higher to ensure a clean appearance and reliable quality.

Diamond clarity scale
  • Carat

Gemologists measure a diamond’s weight in carats, with one carat equal to 200 milligrams (0.2 grams). This means you can choose a carat weight that fits your budget, but it’s important to understand that carat refers to weight—not the actual size of the diamond.

Always Demand an IGI Grading Report before Purchasing

Before purchasing a diamond, make sure it comes with a grading report from a reputable authority such as GIA or IGI. Always ask the jeweler for the report number and verify it through official channels to confirm the details of your diamond. A grading report typically includes key information such as cut, color, clarity, and carat weight to ensure its quality.

Understanding an IGI Report

The report will include details such as the report date and number, shape and cutting style, and precise measurements, along with the full 4Cs grading. It may also provide information on polish, symmetry, fluorescence, laser inscription, and the diamond’s growth or treatment process.

IGI and Caraxy Co-Branded Report

Here is an IGI report example for our DEFINITIES diamond. From this report, we can observe the following details:

  • IGI Report Number: LG677509154.
This number typically matches the inscription on the diamond and may appear in multiple places on the report to ensure consistency. You can use this to verify authenticity and view the official digital report with matching details.

View the digital report on the IGI verification website using the report number.

  • Description: LABORATORY-GROWN DIAMOND.
This section indicates whether the diamond is lab-grown or natural.

  • Carat Weight: 2.02 carats.

  • Color Grade: D, meaning colorless.

  • Clarity Grade: VVS2, meaning very, very slightly included.

  • Cut Grade: Excellent, as the name suggests.

We can also understand the proportions of different parts of the diamond. If you are looking for more precise proportion details, you can find them in the PROPORTIONS section. The Clarity Characteristics section shows the distribution of inclusions under magnification.

If the diamond exhibits a Hearts & Arrows optical effect, it will be noted under the Comments section within Additional Grading Information. This is one of the key differences compared to standard diamonds.

These are the essential details you should understand once you receive your grading report. For more in-depth information, please refer to our guide: Know about Lab-Grown Diamond Certification”. Explore our lab-grown diamond engagement rings below:

The Significant Effect Brought by Diamond Shape

Diamond shapes can generally be divided into two categories: round and fancy shapes. Different shapes require different settings and mounting styles to bring out their best features. Even on their own, shapes can have a significant impact on a diamond’s overall look.

Benefits of Elongated Diamond Shapes

Shapes such as emerald, marquise, and pear are considered elongated diamond shapes. When choosing this type of diamond:

  • They tend to appear larger visually and can create a slimming effect, making your fingers look longer and more elegant.

  • They offer a more distinctive look, giving the impression of a unique and personal style.

  • They allow for more versatile design options, from modern styles like East-West and Toi et Moi to classic designs such as Three-Stone and Hidden Halo.

Benefits of Non-Elongated Diamond Shapes

Within non-elongated shapes, when you choose fancy shapes such as cushion, princess, radiant, or heart:

  • They tend to create a stronger sense of presence and visual weight. While they don’t significantly elongate the fingers, they offer a more balanced and stable overall look.

  • They also come with more defined style identities. Each shape carries its own character—for example, cushion shapes feel vintage, soft, and romantic, while princess cuts are known for a modern, clean aesthetic.

Benefits of Round Diamond Shapes

Round brilliant is the only diamond shape with standardized facet structure and proportions, making it the only shape that receives an official cut grade from GIA. When choosing a round diamond:

  • Its strict proportions allow for optimal light reflection, delivering the highest level of brilliance. This is why round diamonds remain the most popular choice.

  • It is the safest option for an engagement ring—timeless, classic, and never going out of style.

  • It works well with almost all settings and ring styles, from the classic solitaire to more dazzling designs like halo.

The Best Setting and Right Metal for Your Rings

When choosing a diamond, the setting is just as important, as it can significantly impact both the diamond’s appearance and perceived value. The choice of metal also plays a key role, with options like platinum and 18K white gold being the most popular. Platinum, in particular, offers greater durability but typically comes at a higher price.

The setting also influences the overall wearing experience, including factors such as security, durability, and comfort. Many people even associate engagement ring styles with personal values or aesthetic preferences—for example, a bezel setting reflects a modern, minimalist look, while a halo setting leans more toward a glamorous and romantic style.

This is why engagement ring styles and setting types play such a crucial role in the selection process.

Choosing the Right Diamond with a Clear Budget in Mind

By now, you should have a general understanding of how diamonds are priced. To find a diamond that truly matches your expectations, it’s important to have a clear budget and a solid sense of value.

If your budget is limited, consider adjusting your priorities—such as choosing a lab-grown diamond, which typically costs 30%–50% less than a natural diamond, or opting for slightly lower color or clarity grades to achieve better overall value.

Choosing a Reputable Online Jewelers

Whether you choose to buy online or in-store, finding a trustworthy jeweler is just as important. A reliable jeweler should not only provide professional guidance but also ensure a smooth and comfortable buying experience.

  • Check online reviews and don’t hesitate to ask key questions—this helps you evaluate their expertise, transparency, and patience.

  • Always request a diamond grading report before purchasing, and verify it through the issuing authority.

  • A reputable jeweler should be willing to provide videos of the diamond’s brilliance under professional lighting (such as ASET scope), as well as in natural lighting conditions.

  • Ideally, they should also provide proof that matches the diamond’s laser inscription with its certificate, ensuring full authenticity.

Tips and Tricks Summary

  • Ask for photos or videos of the diamond under direct natural sunlight, rather than showroom lighting, as this reflects how it will look in everyday wear.

  • Request the diamond’s report number and verify it through the official website to confirm authenticity.

  • Prioritize diamonds with higher cut grades, as cut has the greatest impact on brilliance and light performance in natural lighting.

  • If you’re working with a limited budget, keep in mind that DEF diamonds are all classified as colorless, and the differences are not visible to the naked eye—allowing for some flexibility in color choice.

  • Choose a clarity grade of VS2 or higher to ensure a clean appearance.

  • Before purchasing, review the warranty and after-sales policies, including services such as cleaning, resizing, and repairs.

  • Select a reputable jeweler—especially one that offers patient customer support, provides all the information above, and has genuine customer reviews and real product images.
